Our Actions for Climate Justice
Youth Work Ireland Galway have been hugely active in the area of climate action over the last number of years. Youth groups across the county have led out on campaigns including #GotTheBottle which aimed at reducing the amount of plastic water bottles used among young people in Ireland. This national campaign was in collaboration with Trocaire and other youth projects in the country. The campaign targeted second level schools across Ireland in an effort to reduce the waste caused by single-use disposable plastic bottles. The young people organised a climate action event (games, activities, information display) in Galway city centre to engage the public with the topic.

Another innovative campaign took place in 2018 and was entitled Pack It In. This campaign aimed at raising awareness about plastic food packaging waste and promoted more sustainable alternatives.

In 2018 representatives from every secondary school in Galway city were invited to participate to two youth summits focusing on Climate Change in 2017 and Zero Waste in 2018. The event included workshops with experts and activities run by the youth committee to raise awareness about the topics. The afternoon sessions unleashed young people’s creative side by using recycled material or sustainable swaps to create new items like canvas bags, reusable mugs.

Young people from Youth Work Ireland Galway also took part and lead out on the Climate Strikes in Galway City.
